Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about College Corps? You're not alone. Browse the FAQs below — and if you don't find what you're looking for, reach out to us at collegecorps@calpoly.edu.

General

What is the day-to-day life of a College Corps fellow?

A day in the life of a College Corps fellow varies by site assignment. Some examples are leading after-school sports programs for K–12 students, gardening and tending farm animals, stocking and organizing food pantry supplies, tabling and promoting sustainability projects, designing marketing materials, and so much more.

Can current College Corps fellows re-apply?

Yes, current College Corps fellows can reapply as long as they meet two requirements: they are enrolled as full-time students for the entire academic year in good academic standing, and are in good standing with the College Corps program.

Do I need a car?

You don't have to have a car to be eligible for this program. Please take into consideration the different sites and transportation needs when making your site preferences.

Is there transportation assistance?

College Corps utilizes various means of transportation for fellows and will work with fellows to come up with the best plan.

What kind of commitment will my site require?

Think of this as a part-time job with shifts you commit to attend. Your sites rely on your service and contribution each week. There will be opportunities to start service before the school year begins, as well as serve back home.

Hours & Commitment

How many hours do I need to complete?

450 hours is the requirement for the service term. 450 is a daunting number, but with some proactive time management skills and lots of support you can do it!

How many hours a week should I serve?

Fellows are encouraged to serve a minimum of 15 hours a week. We recognize this may look different quarter by quarter. You will be able to connect with your site supervisor each quarter regarding any changes to your schedule.

How many units do I need to be enrolled in?

You need to be a full-time student each quarter to remain eligible for this program. Students in blended master's programs are not eligible for College Corps.

What is the College Corps course requirement?

As a member of College Corps, you will be enrolled in a 1-unit course each quarter.

What if I have a senior project coming up next year?

Have a senior project next year? Strategize with your professor on how you can align it with your service site's needs. For example, a material engineering senior project on sustainable medical waste, or strategic business models for climate action NGOs.

Can this count as an internship?

Fellows in the past have been able to get internship credit for their fellowship. Work with your advisor if you would like to explore this option.

Financial Aid

How are the monthly living stipends paid?

Monthly living stipends are dispersed through financial aid via direct deposit (if set up) or a check.

When will I receive my education award?

After the completion of 450 hours and completion of your service term, your education award will be dispersed.

Do I need to receive financial aid to qualify for this program?

The College Corps program works in conjunction with your financial aid package, but you do not have to qualify for financial aid to qualify for this program. If accepted, you will work closely with a financial aid advisor to understand how this program works with your financial aid package.

What if I'm graduating?

If you are graduating, you will still be awarded your education award. You can use it toward future education such as a master's degree, payment of loans, pursuit of a professional license or certification, or as a gift to a family member's education.

Is the living stipend or education award taxable income?

Yes. Speak with a tax professional and the financial aid office to learn more.
